We suspect it is because they can sell a laptop with lower-end hardware if Windows is installed in S Mode. It makes a Windows device a contender against Chrome devices. Full Windows 10 and Windows running in S Mode have the same minimum system requirements to be installed. It would be next to useless. So, we get computers with far greater specifications at a far greater cost.

Windows 10 in S Mode is likely to run just fine on those minimum specifications. A device built at, or close to, those minimum specs are going to be far more affordable than the full-featured laptops costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If we want to use the full version of our Windows OS, we can take it out of S Mode and go into regular more anytime we want to.

I have run an IT corporation for over 25 years. I am seeing more market share move to Chrome OS and Macs. My company is now sending our techs for chrome and Mac training. We have stopped selling all laptops outside of Chrome books, macs and surface Pro with pro. I agree with the last response, but for a different reason. I thought S mode would just block questionable apps, not normal mainstream ones like Overdrive from the public library. I chose it because I was very happy with the Surface 3, but this S mode has turned me against Microsoft computers. I’m still waiting for someone buying a Windows S computer willingly and knowingly. That migh be a very small number of users. I had my first experience with S Mode buying a cheap HP laptop several months ago.

It came with S Mode as does most cheaper low end laptops. I gave it a solid try over a couple weeks and honestly the only thing that caused me to upgrade to Windows Home was the lack of apps available in the Windows Store. If you are going to rely solely on a apps store to install software you have to provide users with a complete App’s Store filled with Apps that users want to use.

The first time you have to go outside of that for a application you will be forced to opt out of the S Mode. I definitely think the concept is a good one for security, but it’s been so poorly implemented and supported that most won’t stick it out with S mode for very long. Like many other companies today, ‘s’ mode is meant to make it easier for microsoft to “Data-Mine, Phish, and Track” user’s activities so they can make money from selling that information.

Same reason microsoft tries to convince you to “stay signed-in” in mail apps!! Its easy to switch out just buy a new key. But I bought my Smode pc because it was cheap. Windows S mode restricts your pc so that they can sell it for less. And maybe make a side profit from your store purchases. If you dont need a fancy pc to do fancy things, It is just basically a trial version of windows You get with your pc.
